Patagonia - Dedicated to Protecting the Environment
Patagonia is a company that has long been known for it’s dedication to protecting the environment. It has a very strong corporate responsibility policy and unlike many other companies puts it’s money where it’s mouth is by funding numerous environmental initiatives including giving 10% of pretax profits to support environmental activism.
Patagonia sells high performance outdoor wear for men, women and children and works to produce clothing that has a minimal impact on the environment but without compromising the quality. They use a variety of fibres for their cloting including environmentally friendly recycled and recyclable polyester, organic cotton, hemp, organic wool and chlorine-free wool. Recycled polyester is made from soda bottles, unusable second quality fabrics and worn out garments.
The common threads recycling programme was launched by Patagonia in 2005 to help reduce waste and increase sustainability of clothing. Patagonia takes responsibility for every product that it makes by recycling old clothes into new ones. The programme started with just Capilene® Performance Baselayers but has now expanded to include Patagonia® fleece, Polartec® fleece clothing (from any maker), Patagonia cotton T-shirts, and now some additional polyester and nylon-6 products that come with a Common Threads tag.
