This video by the Environmental Justice Foundation explains just why it is so important to pick your cotton carefully. Developing countries are the main producers of cotton with over two thirds of the worldwide production coming from developing or former Soviet Union Countries. Issues with the growth of cotton in these countries include the well documented cases of forced child labour, water shortages and the pollution and health issues surrounding the vast use of pesticides for cotton cultivation.

Buying organic cotton from a reliable source ensures that it has been produced without causing pollution, environmental degradation, harm to human health and poverty amongst farmers. The EJF campaigns for cotton to be labelled with country of origin and raise public awareness and demand for ‘clean cotton’. They also campaign for an EU regulation on forced child labour.
